Welcome

Ammassalik Museum is a small local museum consisting of a cultural history museum housed in the old church of the city, which is placed on an elevation behind the city's harbor. Below the church is the Photo Museum, where art and modern exhibitions are exhibited, here is also access to a smaller library with the museum's book collection. In addition to the two main buildings, the museum has three smaller buildings, the Potato House, the Chapel and the Turf house. The turf house is open to visitors, who here can get an insight into the standard of living 130 years ago.

Buildings

The Oldest Tupilaq

In the museum exhibition, you can see the oldest known tupilaq from East Greenland. It was made by Mitsivarniaanga (1860-1910), the shaman of Angmagssalik, in 1893. Mitsivarniaanga's son was the later famous artist of East Greenlandic art, Kaarale Andreassen (1890-1934). In the collection, you can see a number of newer tupilaqs as well.
